Cenex has developed Fleet carbon reduction guidance and a Fleet carbon reduction tool to help managers and operators make informed decisions on the best way to reduce carbon in their vehicle fleet.
FLEET OPERATORS face significant challenges in responding to the need to lower carbon emissions and to reduce the energy use of their vehicles. Minimising environmental impact is a key factor in today’s market place, and reducing CO2 emission to a level that minimises climate change is required for the sustainable market of tomorrow. Reducing fuel use and so fuel costs, not only assists an organisation’s response to the environmental challenge, but also makes a powerful economic case for examining energy-efficient technologies to power vehicles.
Cenex Fleet carbon reduction guidance
The guidance comprises three parts:
1 Evaluating low carbon vehicle options This document presents a step-by-step approach to fleet carbon reduction, from making the case for low carbon vehicles, base-lining the emissions of your current fleet, assessing the best technology options for your particular situation through to trialling low carbon options.
2 Technology guidance This section offers a background on the important technologies for a low carbon fleet. It provides information on the underlying improvements available in conventional engine technology, through hybrid and pure electric options and gaseous fuels.
3 Case studies The final section presents four studies of the integration of low carbon vehicles into public and private sector fleets. It explains the drivers behind fleet carbon reduction decisions, the real-life issues and resource implications of running fleet trials and how to use the results obtained to inform future fleet decision-making.

Cenex’s Fleet carbon reduction tool allows accurate estimation of the carbon reduction performance of different transport fuels and technology options. The vehicle duty and application are characterised, and this data is input into a sophisticated simulation model. This model outputs whole-life cost and greenhouse gas emission predictions relevant to each low carbon technology option for your fleet. The model therefore yields quantitative information to feed into the decision-making process for choosing low carbon technology options which can reduce and/or eliminate the need for trialling some technology options in the field.
