Greenwich Council commissioned Cenex to analyse the Greenwich 2008/2009 vehicle fleet data and proposed waste collection profile using the Cenex Biomethane Toolkit and gas yield calculator. The purpose of the analysis was to ascertain the amount of vehicle fuel, revenue, carbon dioxide (CO2) and air quality savings that could be realised through the introduction of a local Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility to produce biomethane from the Council’s proposed organic waste collection service for use as a vehicle fuel.
The Cenex Biomethane Calculator has been designed to give an indicative production quantity of biomethane and an indicative revenue value in both combined heat and power (CHP) and vehicle applications. This allows for a quantitative decision to be made on whether a more detailed engineering and financial analysis for a particular AD programme should be progressed.
Cenex’ analysis revealed that the available annual 20,000 tonne feedstock of mixed food waste (kerbside collection) would yield almost 900,000 kg of biomethane from a single stage AD facility. At early 2009 prices, this could either be used to generate income from electricity sales of around £375,000 or fuel savings of between £160,000 and £300,000.
Further detailed analysis showed that that the most cost effective fleets for Greenwich to replace with biomethane vehicles would be refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) followed by road sweepers. A 20,000 tonne facility would service 35 of the Council’s 38 RCVs with a total CO2 saving of almost 3,300 tonnes per annum on a well-to-wheel basis.
