The roll-out of a national charging infrastructure for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles is becoming a reality, with Government agencies, local councils and private businesses all coming together to create a series of 'Plugged-in Places' accross the UK.
Cenex are seeking organisations in the Midlands region on behalf of the governments Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) to host and operate Electric Vehicle charging points and become part of the Plugged-in Midlands project.
Grant Funding
On joining the Plugged-in Midlands project and becoming a host of an Electric Vehicle charging point, you will be eligible for a grant contribution towards all costs that would be considered capital expenditure including:
- Site survey
- Charge post procurement
- Installation of the charge post including; ground excavation, civil engineering works and cabling associated with the post
- Commissioning and electrical certification
- New feeder pillar and/or meter installation from DNO/electricity provider (if required)
- Connection to power source
- TMO application costs (if applicable)
- Parking signs and road markings
- Charge post protection barrier (if required)
- Labour costs for the installation (at cost rates)
- Maintenance and Warranty (for up to 3 years)
- Data fees, management/network subscription and RFID cards
To be eligible for OLEV grant funding, hosts must meet the Cenex Terms and Conditions of Service, comply with the Conditions of Grant and by signing the PiM Order Form agree to do so. Should you decide to become a host the documents can be obtained through the 'Register Your Interest' tab.
Grant levels:
40% - Private Businesses
60% - Domestic
60% - Local (including county, city, borough and district) Councils and unitary authorities
Electric Vehicle Incentives
Plugged-in Places is part of wider efforts by the Government to switch motorists to Electric Vehicles. With the Government supporting the uptake of Electric Vehicles through cost and tax incentives and with Electric Vehicles forecast to have a 10 per cent market share by 2020, now is the ideal time to ensure that charging points are available for the increasing number of Electric Vehicle drivers.
Plug-in Car and Plug-in Van Grant
The Government's strategy combines funding for infrastructure with a 'Plug-in Car and Plug-in Van Grant'. The plug-in car grant is 25%, up to a maximum of £5,000 towards the cost of an eligible plug-in car. For more information, click here.
Electric Van buyers will be able to receive a 20% Government grant of up to £8,000 towards the cost of an eligible plug-in van For more information, click here.
Tax Incentives
- Zero road tax on Electric Cars.
- Zero benefit-in-kind tax until 2015 for users of electric company cars.
- Zero congestion charge.

- Standard 3kW charging point - 8-12 hours.
- Fast 7kW charging point - 3-4 hours.
- Quick/Rapid 50kW charging point - 30 minutes to reach 80% charge.
Range
- It costs around £2 to fully charge an Electric Vehicle and then a range of 70-100 miles per charge depending on vehicle is achievable.
