Resources

This section of the Cenex website identifies information resources relevant to organisations interested to work with Cenex to develop and demonstrate low carbon and fuel cell technologies in transport applications.

The KTN provides a further, more extensive, database of relevant reference material.

Priorities for the development of Low Carbon and Fuel Cell Technologies

At the end of 2004, the Innovation Working Group of the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership organised a workshop to help define the Research, Development and Demonstration (RD&D) priorities for Cenex to help progress.

These priorities were developed with reference to two roadmaps, the SMMT Foresight Vehicle Technology Roadmap and the Fuel Cells roadmap developed by Fuel Cells UK.

Demonstration Activities around the World

Demonstrations play a valuable role in helping organisations develop their know-how and enhance their capabilities.  They also help inform the end-user and wider stakeholder communities about the benefits and practical aspects concerning the use of new fuels and technologies, thereby helping establish public acceptance and support.  Public acceptance will be particularly important for disruptive technologies like hydrogen, where significant structural investments will need to be made to develop a new distribution infrastructure.

There are a great many technology demonstrations taking place around the world for low carbon and fuel cell vehicles.  Information on these demonstrations is available from a variety of sources.

For fuel cells and hydrogen, Fuel Cell Today recently published a progress report on fuel cell vehicles, whilst there is a searchable database for fuel cell and hydrogen projects available, on the European Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Platform (HFP) website.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (eere) provides an extensive information resource on alternatively fuelled vehicle developments in the United States, whilst Fuel Cells 2000 is a useful source of information on fuel cells.

Sources of Funding for UK Organisations

Funding for collaborative Research, Development and Demonstration (RD&D) of low carbon and fuel cell technologies is available from a variety of sources, including the UK Government, through the DTI Technology Programme and from the European Union, through the Framework Programme .

For hydrogen and fuel cells, both the International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy and the International Energy Agency each coordinate international funding programmes.

In the UK, the Energy Saving Trust (EST) operates a Low carbon research and development programme that has funded the development and demonstration of a number of low carbon vehicles.  It also operates a Refuelling and recharging infrastructure programme which supports the installation of refuelling stations for alternative fuels.
