Transport: Reducing Construction Carbon Emissions in Logistics (ReCCEL)

Reducing Construction Carbon Emissions in Logistics (ReCCEL) is an Innovate UK funded project that aims to provide new insight into solutions used to inform procurement decisions and help highlight low carbon alternatives.

This collaborative research and development project has investigated the application of low carbon solutions at major UK construction sites. Cenex working with Costain and the University of Edinburgh have demonstrated how understanding the supply chain and taking data driven actions can result in significant carbon and cost savings on projects such as the London CrossRail fit-out.

  • The project has shown how the use of telemetry aligned to activity optimisation modeling can reduce fuel usage by improving efficiency of vehicle movement, developing new knowledge to allow supply chains to be easily integrated into construction projects.
  • The project has demonstrated the effective application of Low carbon vehicles in construction logistics, delivering cost and carbons savings whilst maintaining operational efficiency.
  • The project illustrated how combined construction supply chain members can collaborate to deliver shared value in major projects.

The ReCCEL project partners will progress the project findings, integrating solutions into future construction project procurement tenders, to demonstrate the solutions identified in the ReCCEL ‘tool box’ with supply chain support.
