Wireless Charging for Electric Taxi (WiCET) Trial

Project Brief

The purpose of the WiCET project is to demonstrate the commercial and technical viability of deploying wireless charging for electric Hackney Carriages in medium and large cities. This demonstrator builds upon a successful feasibility study and addresses the technology and commercial challenges identified.

Nine vehicles will be fitted with wireless charging hardware and used in a practical demonstrator in Nottingham until Spring 2022 to show how the concept of taxi rank based charging can work and how the billing system can operate.

Objectives

  • Identify the optimum number and location of charging pads and wireless charged enabled taxis, implications for the electricity grid, environmental impacts, as well as operational and commercial benefits to the driver/operator.
  • Engagement and insights into the attitudes and behaviours of taxi drivers, in relation to wireless charging, electric vehicles and rapid charging.
    Stakeholder engagement with local authorities, Distribution Network
  • Operators, installation companies and vehicle OEMs.
    Recommendations on policies, standards and safety guidance for local authorities, operators and installers of wireless charging infrastructure.

Outputs and Deliverables

The outcomes of this demonstrator will be to prove the technical and commercial case for the wireless charging of Hackney Carriages in medium and large cities

It also endorses the UK as an international leader in demonstrating the potential of new and emerging technologies in the field of clean mobility, meeting aspirations set out in the Government’s Road to Zero Strategy.
