Cenex was commissioned by the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) to study the implementation of a large scale anaerobic digestion (AD) facility in the East Midlands. The report focuses on the anaerobic digestion of waste biodegradable materials in the form of commercial and industrial food waste to produce biomethane for use in transport logistic applications.

The investigation resulted from the requirement to address two specific problems which provide challenges to the sustainability of activity across the region:

  • The need to reduce the waste as a result of the EU Landfill Directive and the lack of landfill capacity in the region
  • The need to reduce carbon dioxide and other emissions from transport as detailed in the East Midlands Regional Plan

The study also included a workshop to engage with stakeholders interested in taking forward such a facility.

The main output of this work is a detailed and evidenced business case and implementation plan for an AD facility producing biomethane as a road transport fuel.
